Platinum-selling country band Parmalee knows a thing or two about putting on an epic show, and even though the COVID-19 situation has kept them locked down for now, the band can’t wait to get back on the road!

With their recent single, Just The Way, with rapper Blanco Brown hitting #1 on the charts after performing on The Today Show here in town, the band has always found success right here in NYC – including even recording their first album here! And because of their ties to NYC, we here at The Levity Ball sat down with the lead singer Matt Thomas to find out more about why New York has always had a place in his heart and what’s next after the coronavirus goes away.

When did you first know you wanted to be a singer / musician?

When I was about 15 years old was when I really knew. My brother Scott (Drummer), cousin Barry (Bass Player) and I grew up playing playing in my dad’s band and we joined around that age. But boy once I started, I just never really stopped. Singing and playing was all I cared about and what I spent all of my time doing.

If you weren’t a part of Parmalee, what would you be doing?

I honestly can’t imagine a life not doing anything music related. But if that were the case, I would probably be logging back in North Carolina. My dad and granddad were both loggers their whole lives and my brother and I grew up working closely with them both. So probably would still be doing that since it kinda ran in the family.

Parmalee with Blanco Brown on the set of Just The Way

Parmalee recorded their first album right here in New York. What about the city do you enjoy most and draw inspiration from?

Yes we did, and we LOVED the whole experience there. The energy that lives in the city is really just incredible. Between the lights, people, places, things…. It is just full of energy and opportunity, and we all love that.

Are there any favorite spots to hit up when you are here?

I don’t necessarily have any favorites, but I definitely love being able to try something new every time I go to the city. It really just makes each trip down that much more memorable.

What is your own personal favorite Parmalee song to sing?

Right now it is definitely our new song Just the Way. It is really crazy to see how a song that we love so much be introduced to the world and continually see more and more fans sing it back to us on stage each night. Nothing like it.

What is the best advice you have ever gotten?

My dad use to tell my brother and I this all of the time growing up, and it really just stuck. We used it and continue to use it every day to get us through some of the rough times though our lives. – ‘Keep on plugin’

What are you looking forward to most after the Coronavirus lockdown?

Getting back out on the road!!!! We live to get out on the road and play music in front of people every night. I think this has been the longest we have ever gone just staying at home.. So definitely ready to get back out and play a show!

And final question: What do you want yourself and Parmalee to be remembered for many, many years down the line?

Is that we were able to bring people together through the power of our music. It is something really amazing when you sit back and think about it. So I hope that people remember us from that, or from a show that was truly memorable to them.
