If you haven’t noticed, the world has changed a lot over the past few years, with more and more businesses going digital and heading online. And through all these changes in the ecommerce space, so has been the emergence of Digital Payment Experts who are authorized individuals that allow a business to accept credit card or bank debit card transactions using online ordering or point of sales systems.
But not everyone knows how to select the proper expert, nor knows how to implement this system and way into their current company platform/structure.
Insert in the team and husband and wife duo of Patricia and David Carlin who have helped countless companies here in New York and across the United States learn about these payments, technology and how they can make money whether they own an ecommerce store or even a retail store. They are simply geniuses and gave us an exclusive interview and insight into how it all works with their company Residual Payments!

When did you first discover that you had a passion for helping others?
We both come from families who will give their shirts off their back, and we thankfully the same way. What people sometimes forget is that it’s not the amount of money you have that allows you to be generous. It’s the act of kindness and giving that matters. For example, at the airport yesterday there was a lady with kids and suitcases trying to juggle it all. Without knowing what the other person was going to do, we both jumped in and offered to help her bring her suitcases to her gate. Then we went on our way to our gate. Being generous with your actions and time is equally as important and makes the same impact as giving money does.
How do you figure out if someone is a good fit or not for your programs at Residual Payments?
Our business is one that every single person has been around for their entire life . When you go to a store and buy something, you hand the cashier a credit card. The cashier swipes the credit card in that machine. When that transaction is approved, someone like us (a broker) is paid a small percentage of that transaction. We show people how to partner with us and offer the same services to business owners. Our business is literally something every person should learn about because it’s the most important piece of a business- the money. 50 percent of people who take our program are business owners themselves and they love knowing the ins and outs of how their payment processing works.
What are the main things that people do that lead them to failure from your experience?
They Lack confidence that they are not on equal footing with someone else so they get intimidated. For me Patricia, I learned through practice not to be afraid to speak to anyone regardless of their position. It’s like going to a personal trainer. Just because they are more fit doesn’t mean they are better than the person they are training. They have just refined their skill set.
When someone signs up to work with you or be a part of one of your programs, what can they expect?
They can expect to learn about an industry they had zero idea existed yet they used it throughout their lives. They will leave being able to offer merchant service solutions effectively and either dive in and build a large portfolio of clients or keep this business in their back pocket for as long as they want: even if they have another business, when someone needs merchant services in a year or five years from now, they can offer the services and get paid residual income every month. They will also learn how to build their personal brand, learn marketing and other skills to use in anything else they choose to do in life.
COVID-19 has hit us New Yorkers hard since the start. What advice would you give to those struggling during these times?
There is never a better time to reevaluate what you want to do with your life. You don’t have to radically change your life today, but put together a real action plan and start to implement these changes daily or weekly. Commit to yourself that you will not allow another year to be wasted on the “what ifs”
What is the average cost of your services?
$300
Have you seen an uptick in new people enrolling in your services since COVID-19 hit?
People have always been looking for a way out of their current jobs . People are dreamers in general so Covid gave them a taste of what it was like to take a walk whenever they wanted to. They got to work from home and it’s been a struggle for a lot of people to go back to the way it was showing up at an office daily. More people want to control their destiny
Switching things up, when you come to New York yourself, what are your favorite things to do personally?
So many! We have to eat a shawarma right when we get there. If we don’t get a stomach ache from the shawarma , then we love walking the city from day until night. No matter how many times we go to NY, when you walk around it’s like you see things from a new set of eyes. We like to try our new restaurants and never miss Central Park.
Is it easier or harder to work alongside your loved one?
We find it much easier because we can tell one another exactly what we want without the other person getting bent out of shape or offending them. We get to be free thinkers and bounce ideas off of one another daily. Do things get tense?! 100 percent! We know how to push one another’s buttons so it’s easier to get aggravated quickly but you also have to stop it quickly because you work together. Fights are bad for business and for the relationship.
And final question: What do you want to be remembered for (as a power duo) overall when people look back at you both together and your impact on this world?
That what you see is what you get. We are real people and don’t put on an act. That’s the biggest compliment we get when we meet people who work with us. “You both are exactly who I thought you would be.” Authenticity is the key to our success over the past 20 plus years!
