Bonnaroo 2012 is taking place at none other than
ManchesterTennessee for what is, at first glance, a lop-sided line-up. Major acts include Radiohead, who absolutely dominated the Bonnaroo stage in 2006 with an angelic set, and hope to grace the stage again playing a mix of material throughout their entire holy trinity-esque collection albums. The Red Hot Chili Peppers have a new album after some modest time off, so it is no surprise their hitting Bonnaroo, though their inclusion isn’t reinventing or astonishing the world.
The Beach Boys are doing their 50th Anniversary venture for the second year now, and includes an interesting top-bill inclusion. With their latest single being quite excellent, it’ll be great to see them grace the main stage at Bonnaroo. Phish carry the jam band torch almost single-handedly, and though their inclusion as a top 5 bill is boring as far as news goes, there set should be overextended, colorful, and full of marijuana in the air.
Middle tier bands include Childish Gambino who seems to be just about everywhere when it comes to festivals, and Foster the People who exploded last year with their summer jam-hit “Pumped Up Kicks.” Pop/rock band fun. are on the bill as well as Grammy-winning Bon Iver who hates the fact that they won a Grammy and so I must introduce him as a winner. Congratulations.
Ben Folds Five, Little Dragon, and The Shins round out the line-up, to make for a rather basic line-up this year. The indie groups included are solid throughout, but the major headliners are a little weak, despite Radiohead’s headlining position.
