Damon Albarn is the primary creative force for the electronic/rap/rock group Gorillaz as well as the classic rock group ‘Blur’, who’s most popular single is “Song 2.” After Blur’s dissolution just under a decade ago, Albarn continued his musical pursuits in the form of ‘Gorillaz,’ an animated rock group consisting of four eccentric characters. Yet Albarn announced that ‘Gorillaz’ have broken up in early 2011, and that seemed to be that.
Albarn said in a recent interview, that ‘Blur’ and the ‘Gorillaz’ may both have a future yet. “Some days I feel one way and other days I feel the other. If you don’t see something as a career but an important part of your life, you don’t know how you’re going to feel about it. Nothing’s been said between us about the beginning or the end.”
Of course, fans would be ecstatic to have either group reform. ‘Blur” burst onto the music scene in the early 90’s with their Oasis-infused rock sound that has since helped pave the way for plenty of post-grunge bands to follow in the late 90’s and early 00’s.
Gorillaz were vastly different stylistically, relying more on rap and electronics than rock. Albarn released four LP’s under the Gorillaz name, including the latest album ‘Plastic Beach’ quickly followed by the free download “The Fall” just months later.
When asked about his recent comments about both groups most likely never coming back to musical life, Albarn clarified, saying “Not everything that comes out of my mouth is serious.”
Only time will tell. In the meantime, check out the massive ‘Blur’ boxset coming out featuring tracks spanning over a decade, as well as some new Albarn production in the form of Bobby Womack’s new album “The Bravest Man in the Universe.”
