Behind the company is Tony Kovicak who spoke to us here at The Levity Ball about how red light therapy is changing people’s lives, and how us New Yorkers can get our hands on a product asap!

To start off, how did you come up with the idea to create Lux Therapy and the incredible red light therapy product?

Lux Therapy was a concept that came to me over the course of multiple years. In 2015, I decided to step away from Corporate America for a year to travel. I knew I wanted to cycle across the country for part of the year, then live in the mountains during the winter as a ski bum, chasing down powder storms around the Rocky Mountains, but beyond that, I was wide open to whatever presented itself. One of my big concerns was that I wouldn’t be able to finish the bike ride due to the normal aches and pains that come with nearing 40 years of age. I was in decent shape, but I knew the rigors of this type of trip would challenge me. In addition to normal biking activity, I would carry all of my gear which topped out at over 100-pounds.  Long story short, I made it from Florida to Oregon over the course of four months without any issues or aches and pains. After finishing the ride, I returned to Michigan to regroup. During that time I started feeling a little depressed. While I was biking, despite my fears, my body felt great and I enjoyed being outside, but when I was back in Michigan, I started getting small injuries and my body felt tortured – which was strange as I just completed a crazy physical feat of peddling 4,000 miles with almost no physical issues. As I contemplated moving to the mountains, at the last minute, I decided to swap snow for sand. I flew to Costa Rica and spent the next 6 months close to nature, soaking up the sun, and learning how to surf.

Snap/Cut to moving to San Francisco to work in the tech industry. During that time I continued to value health and wellness, even though I was back to living in the fast-paced, high-stress lifestyle, only now I was in silicon valley working with one of the largest tech companies in the world. My work required frequent travel and regular trips back and forth to China. I often listened to podcasts to pass the time on long flights. During one of these trips a podcast mentioned Red Light Therapy (RLT) and I was immediately enthralled. I bought a few light devices and started using them. Within two weeks I noticed a significant difference in my skin, sleep, and workouts. I became consumed with the research associated with the technology and it became clear to me that the reason I had no aches and pains during the bike ride was because of the amount of sun I had received every day. However in  Michigan’s northern climate, the lack of sunshine made me feel depressed. Also, looking at the whole situation in my rearview mirror, I see that the last-minute decision to move to Costa Rica was due to the need for sunshine, but I didn’t know that at the time.

As I dug into the research associated with RLT I became interested in the technology used in light devices. The more I learned the more I wanted to share this technology. I bought devices for everyone in my  family. Just as I had, they too incorporated the amazing technology  into their lives. When I saw how it dramatically affected my mom, I immediately knew I wanted to bring this technology to the masses. I saw how I could help people, including my parents and family members, and it planted a desire to design and develop my own product for the masses.

Lux Therapy is about more than a device, it’s about curating the necessary elements needed to maximize potential. It helps users develop or enhance their wellness practice, which we believe is one the crucial details to living a balanced, happy productive life.. Lux Therapy is for all people – Athletes, beauty professionals, retirees, and working moms. The strong and healthy, the hurt and healing.

How does your product differ from others on the market today?

Lux Therapy is a design forward product that doesn’t compromise on function. We’ve scrutinized the industry and developed a unique approach to how RLT can be integrated into a person’s life. Our competitors offer a panel product that is bulky and typically requires  permanent installation, requiring users to ‘go to the light’. Our device joins the customer when and where they need it. The easier we can make it for the user to integrate the product into their life, the more likely the device will be used regularly. Creating a routine with RLT allows the customer to experience the benefits of this amazing technology at a much faster rate. Our device is easy to move, simple to use, and lovely to look at. An integrated kickstand and a unique base allow the device to be positioned horizontally, vertically, or at any angle along a 160 degree arc. Four wavelengths of light provide an array of treatments across a larger range of light wavelengths. The LED touch panel provides tactile, visual, and audio feedback to simplify set-up. These features are packaged beautifully in a device that’s meant to stay on display instead of hidden in a closet. Our design combines vintage elements with modern tech, to give consumers the most advanced, aesthetically pleasing device on the market.

With COVID-19, people here in New York and across the United States are unable to visit spas for various treatments. What sort of treatments does your product do in the comfort of your own home?

With access to spas limited, consumers can look to Lux Therapy for stress reduction, muscle relaxation, and beauty treatments at home.

RLT speeds healing and increases collagen production, reducing wrinkles, brightening skin tone, and improving the skin’s overall look and feel.

The beauty of the technology is that it provides localized relief of aches and pains like arthritis or sore muscles, and with continued use, it provides systematic improvements to sleep and mood regulation.

When RLT interacts with a cell, it helps modulate the cells accordingly.  For example RLT has the ability to up/down regulate and modulate the thyroid, which is one of the keys to a healthy immune system.

Besides being able to use it at home, red light therapy can help build up a stronger immune system. What ways does it help with that, which is key to fighting off COVID-19 too?!

First and foremost, we’re excited that health and wellness are becoming a larger portion of the overall conversation as they relate to the Pandemic. We truly believe that the best defense is a good offense, and in our opinion, that starts with general health and wellness. Lux Therapy contributes to better health.

In general, we feel that wellness is the key to longevity, and that RLT can help improve one’s foundational health. However, the research needed to understand how RLT might combat COVID-19 specifically isn’t yet available.  We believe in transparency and providing scientific studies to back our recommendations.

It has been shown that RLT has the ability to regulate complex systems, thereby optimizing immunity at a cellular level. In an exciting study, it was found that the use of RLT has the potential for reversing thymic involution – which is basically the degradation of our thymus gland.  The Thymus Gland is crucial for a healthy immune system, and can improve immune function in aged people and even extend lifespan. An optimized Thyroid is crucial as it relates to an optimized immune system.  Increasing evidence suggests that thyroid hormones are major modulators of immunity response across the complex system of monocytes, macrophages, leukocytes, natural killer cells, and lymphocytes, and correlate to immune functions such as chemotaxis, phagocytosis, generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and cytokine synthesis. It’s the dysfunctional thyroid that ends up creating an overactive or under-active immune system.

In addition, another study showed how “Platelets play a much bigger role in our immune system than previously thought, according to researchers. In addition to their role in coagulation and healing, platelets also act as the immune system’s first responders when a virus, bacterium, or allergen enters the bloodstream. This discovery opens the door to new ways to treat patients with septic shock caused by viral or bacterial infection and people with auto-immune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and lupus.”.  So, by improving the body’s platelet regeneration, RLT effectively can provide the body a more robust defense system.

The beauty of RLT is that it helps improve your cells at the most basic level.  A strong wellness foundation will inevitably lead to a stronger immune system. The studies related to RLT show that it bolsters the immune system  and provides a charge to the complex systems within the body that help to support optimal immune function.  Even though there isn’t specific research associated with COVID-19 and RLT, our companies ethos is to improve overall wellness, which in combination with a healthy lifestyle, is the best offense.

It’s complex stuff, that’s for sure. But in witnessing my aging mother and father utilizing the light, and seeing them avoid their typical  common maladies like sinus infections and normal colds, I continue to be encouraged and passionate for others to improve upon their daily wellness program.

You are from Michigan, so you understand the cold temperatures this time of year, like here in New York. What skin benefits can red light therapy have, considering a lot of us have dry and breaking out skin these days?

If you have a skin related concern, RLT has you covered. With the imposing winter upon the Northern States, I’ve found that not only does RLT reduce dry and damaged skin, it also helps even out skin blemishes and overall skin tone.

This is where RLT shines, pun intended! Wound and skin healing was one of the original outcomes that put RLT in the spotlight.  In the 90s when NASA first started researching Light Therapy, it was found that wounds healed 20% faster and with less scarring when RLT  was utilized. RLT increases circulation and helps with the formation of new capillaries, which means the wound receives more oxygen and nutrients to enhance the healing process. At the cellular level, RLT increases ATP production in the cells leading to greater healing.

RLT is typically misunderstood, and mostly associated with the healthy glow you receive when you visit the beach, or on the opposite side of the coin, with melanoma that comes from excessive exposure to UV light. It’s true that certain portions of natural sunlight in excess are harmful to your skin, which is one of the main reasons we are unable to get the proper dosage of red and near-infrared light from the sun in order to stimulate our cells to the level that they need. It’s one of most recent findings that many are deficient in sun exposure, which has been associated with a variety of ailments and maladies.  Our Light Therapy device solves this problem, and optimizes red and near-infrared wavelengths which stimulate our bodies natural ability to heal itself without a tan, aka damage to the skin.

One of the ways that I continue to be surprised with RLT is through the treatment of skin issues and seasonal ailments, like poison ivy, dry skin, and blemishes. During the summer months in Michigan, mountain biking is one of my favorite activities. Poison ivy runs rampant around the trails. In the past, whenever I’ve gotten Poison ivy, it’s been a challenge to get rid of, and mostly would result in a visit to the doctor for a prescription or steroid shot.  However, in recent years, I’ve learned to immediately spot treat the areas with RLT. I’ve found this supercharges the healing process!  Since I’ve been using RLT in this strategic way, there hasn’t been a situation where I’ve been required to go to the doctor, and my skin has never looked better.  Likewise in the winter when my skin has taken a beating from the excessive cold, RLT helps to keep my skin rejuvenated, without the cracked, bleeding knuckles and cuticles that plague many Michiganders.

What are you most looking forward to after COVID-19 calms down? Any plans to visit New York?

First and foremost visiting family and friends and getting back to many of the gatherings that (like everyone) I took for granted. In addition, I can’t wait to start traveling again. With the amazing team that I’ve assembled around the world, it’s been more than a year since I’ve seen them in person. We’ve done a great job utilizing technology to stay connected and informed, but there’s nothing like sitting down with everyone and connecting face-to-face. In addition, Lux Therapy will be going on the road to visit primary cities and locations for promotions and in person events in 2021. New York City is one of our favorite Cities, and we can’t wait to visit.

And final question: What do you want Lux Therapy to be remembered for overall when people look back at the product in the future?

Compassion and a vision for a healthier community. These values have always been something that everyone on the team appreciates. We’ve designed our entire strategy around this vision. We say Lux is more than a device, it’s a lifestyle. Keep “Livin’ the Lux Life!”.
